Ausangate Sanctuary
At its highest point Apu Ausangate reaches 6,385 meters above sea level (20,948 ft)! It is admired for its beauty and is considered sacred by the Andean people. At the foot of this mountain one can enjoy and relax at the medicinal hot springs.
This moderate to difficult adventure starts with a 6:00 am pick-up at your hotel in Cusco. During the 3-hour ride, we will pass by several small towns until we reach the town of Pacchanta where our 5-hour hike in the Ausangate Sanctuary will begin. It is possible to rent horses for the ascent, but these must be reserved in advance. We will see several lakes: Lake Azul, Cocha Otorongo, Pucacocha Lake, Alqacocha Lake and Q’omercocha Lake. With the guidance of an Andean priest, we will participate in a cleansing and purification ceremony. We will also be able to see alpacas, llamas, birds, vizcachas and with a little luck the majestic Andean condor. In Pacchanta we will be able to enjoy hot springs after our hike, so do not forget to bring your bathing suit. We will spend the night in Pacchanta. The next day, we will return to Cusco after breakfast and will be arriving around noon.
