Humantay Lake

Humantay is a Quechua word meaning ‘Head of the Gods’. The lake is surrounded by 2 important apus or ‘spirits that inhabit the mountains’. These mountains are the Salkantay and Humantay. It was formed by the melting of apu Humantay. Both mountains are part of the Andean Mountain Range and are considered by our ancestors as majestic and emblematic apus or tutelary deities.

In order to reach this beautiful lagoon one must conquer the moderate to difficult ascent. It is located at 4,200 meters above sea level (13,779 ft). The high altitude and thin air are considerable issues that must be considered prior to the ascent.
