Salinera de Maras and Moray
Salinera de Maras
Maras is an impressive salt mine that has been used since ancient times. Currently, members of the local community extract the salt using an ancient method, starting with spring water that is routed to 5,000 shallow pools. The water is then allowed to evaporate forming layers upon layers of salt. Salt collection is done by hand in a traditional way. Maras is located at 3,380 meters above sea level (11,080 ft). It is hard to describe the beauty of this mine as it morphs, as one approaches it, from a plain patchwork of different shades of pink to a grandiose quilt of peaceful pools.
Moray
Moray is a complex of several concentric circular terraces that were experimental agricultural centers where different varieties of corn were developed and were potato seeds adapted to diverse ecosystems and altitudes were generated for distribution to the entire Tawantinsuyo (Inca Empire). Products developed in Moray were of the highest nutritional quality. It sits at 3,500 meters above sea level (11,500 ft).
