Q’eswachaka and 4 Lakes
This tour takes you to the last Inca bridge (Q’eswachaka) and four (4) lakes in the Acomayo province. This is a 3-hour road trip from Cusco on gravel roads and with complex access points.
After a 3-hour road trip, we start with a short hike to our first stop to use the last restrooms in the area. After a second 30-minute hike we will arrive at Q’eswachaka, a UNESCU World Heritage Site. This bridge is built using fibers of the indigenous qoya plant which is renewed by way of a ceremony done by members of the local communities. In the past, a grass from the altiplano called ichu was used together with tree trunks attached to a stone structure. Your guide will share historical and cultural information at this location.
Next will be the 1-hour trip to the four (4) lakes called: Pomacanchi, Acopia, Asnaqocha and Pampamarca. This route is made possible by residents of 40 local communities of this region, who offer guides, lodging and restaurants.
Pomacanchi Lake
This lake is located in the upper part of the Vilcanota River, about 2.5 Kms from the village of Pomacanchi. It is about 140 meters deep and is surrounded by abundant types of natural grasses, medicinal plants, totora, mirmi etc., and fish like trout, silversides, huitas, ccarachis, ch’iñis and carp. The municipality has built a tourist camp with totora huts and a place to eat and grill trout. Here you can go on a paddle boat ride with a guide to tour the lake.
Acopia Lake
This lake is located in the town by the same name: Acopia. You will see wild pelicans, ducks and other birds. You will also enjoy the beauty of the surrounding areas and that of the clear water. You will also be able to meet the woman that inspired the best known huayno from Cusco: Vilacha. Valeriana Huillca Condori who is now 85 years old, inspired Cusco composer Miguel Angel Hurtado to write the beautiful melody.
Asnaqocha Lake
Its name literally translates to Smelly Lake. This lake has an abundance of algae that when exposed to sunlight produces a strong odor. You will see large variety of birds and fish.
Pampamarca Lake
This freshwater lake is located at the highest point of our tour at 3,750 meters above sea level. Thanks to the abundance of reeds there is a large variety of wild fauna like parihuanas and ducks.
One can enjoy the surrounding areas of this lake by mountain bike.
